Amy Underwood, widely recognised as “The Digger Girl,” is a Scottish plant operator and HGV driver who has carved a niche for herself in the construction industry.
Growing up in a remote part of Scotland, Amy was immersed in machinery from a young age, working alongside her father in their family-run business, Underwood Plant Hire. Initially aspiring to become a mechanic, she was unable to find work as nobody would take her on, so in 2012 undertook a plant operator apprenticeship at the National Construction College in Norfolk; she was the only girl in the class!
Earning several awards including “Apprentice of the Year” during her training, she then went on to begin sharing her daily experiences operating excavators on social media under the name ‘The Digger Girl’, a trademark she now owns. Her authentic content, showcasing both the triumphs and challenges of construction work, resonated with audiences worldwide, amassing nearly 1 million followers across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
Beyond her operational expertise, Amy is a passionate advocate for women in construction, aiming to inspire the next generation to consider careers in the trades. Balancing her professional life with her family life as a Mum-of-two, she’s making significant strides in breaking industry stereotypes.
